High-tech transhipment sites such as Container-Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) in the Port of Hamburg, Germany, or the Europe Container Terminals (ECT) in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, are impressive on account of their performance, and make clear how efficient terminal design can provide new dimensions in cargo handling. Automation is the key.
The Dynamic Duo for High Productivity – the AGV and the ASC
As a pioneer in the automation of port activities and optimisation of the associated
logistics processes, Gottwald Port Technology is breaking new ground in this sector too. For
automated container transport and container storage, Gottwald offers a dynamic duo in the form of
an AGV and an ACS, which can achieve a higher degree of automation. The advantages for terminal
operators:
The AGV and ASC work hand-in-hand using innovative management software from Gottwald. The management software can be integrated without problem into higher-ranking terminal management systems, and guarantee smooth interaction with other terminal components.
AGV Automated Guided Vehicles
with the option of two types: diesel-hydraulic and diesel-electric. The unmanned,
remote-controlled transporters can hold 20’, 40’ and even 45’ containers, and ensure automated,
high-speed, precise container transport from the quay to the stack yard. They are controlled and
supplied with data by the Gottwald management and navigation software.
ASC
Automated Stacking Cranes
in two versions: ASC (as a portal solution) and ASC-OBC (as an overhead bridge crane). The
Automated Stacking Crane spans nine containers in a 1-over-5 solution and enables economical,
high-density stacking, logistically arranged with short access times. It also forms the link
between quayside and landside equipment such as ship-to-shore cranes, terminal transport vehicles
and trucks.
Innovation at Work
AGVs from Gottwald are the result of many years of development work. Many of the more
than 300 vehicles supplied have already been operating reliably on a daily basis for more than 15
years. The new diesel-electric-drive version will also soon be used for the first time at
Container-Terminal Altenwerder (CTA). The AGV fleet at the Europe Container Terminals (ECT)
Rotterdam, The Netherlands, has already been in operation since the 1990s. This is a customer with
whom Gottwald jointly developed the automation concept at the end of the 1980s.
The Automated Stacking Crane (ASC) also stands for high innovative power and intensive development work by Gottwald in automated port handling. This resulted in the first order in May 2005. The nine stacking cranes from Gottwald are being installed in the most important Belgian seaport, Antwerp.
